General medicine

 

 

The Faculty of Medicine was established on June 17, 1969 after approval by the Assembly of the SAC of Kosovo (official gazette no.20 / 69). The official day of the beginning of the work of Faculty of Medicine is marked December 4, 1969, the day when the first lecture was held on the premises of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Prishtina. The Faculty of Medicine started its work initially only in the field of General Medicine. The teaching staff in its beginnings was composed of teachers from the Faculty of Medicine of Tirana, Belgrade, Zagreb, Skopje as well as local staff. Half a decade after the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine, the local staff, mostly graduates in the countries of the former Yugoslavia such as Zagreb, Belgrade, Skopje, made up almost the entire teaching staff.

By the decision of November 7, 1973, the Faculty of Medicine merged with the Hospital Center of Prishtina, transforming it into a University Clinical Center and registering with the District Commercial Court in Prishtina, starting to operate as an academic unit.

Currently, the Faculty of Medicine (Department of General Medicine), within the University of Prishtina is the most prestigious and attractive faculty for students in the country. Every year, hundreds of the top high school students in Kosovo compete to become part of the Faculty of Medicine, General Medicine Program, with a competition of 8-10 students for one position.

From the Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Medicine over the years generated numerous doctors and professors who gave and continue to give a very valuable contribution to Kosovo health system, but also doctors who have made a name for themselves in the eminent health centers of the world.

The main objectives of the General Medicine Department of the Faculty of Medicine are:

  • Continuous improvement of the quality of teaching and learning by applying interactive methods with the student at the center;
  • Achieving clinical and laboratory skills and performance for independent work;
  • Development of research capacities and research work;
  • Preparing students for international exchanges with higher education institutions in Europe and beyond;
  • Providing modern infrastructure for quality education.
