Dentistry

 

The Assembly of Kosovo on 17.06.1969 (official gazette no. 20/69) approved the law of the establishment the Faculty of Medicine.

Faculty of Medicine in Prishtina established the Section (Branch) of Dentistry, decision no. 1015 dated 24.04.1975,  a date from which a new era of the development of Kosovar dentistry began. The Department of Dentistry carried the burden of education of entire generations of dentists, by tremendously improving and raising the level of dental health services and at the same time protecting the oral health of the population.

The Department of Dentistry carries out complex educational, scientific and health activities, and it`s characterized by three periods of development.

The establishment of the Section (Branch) of Dentistry characterizes the first period. The first hours of pre-clinical practical training was held in the laboratory of the High School of Medicine in Prishtina, while the first clinical exercises in the Dental Polyclinic in Prishtina.

The application of violent measures and the expulsion of the educational staff from institutional facilities characterized second period.

In the further development of the Department of Dentistry, the establishment of the University Dental Clinical Center of Kosovo in 2004 is crucial, as an autonomous and independent institution.

The Department of Dentistry of the Faculty of Medicine, together with UDCCK is the only tertiary and reference center whom provide dental and oral health services in Kosovo. This institution reached an enviable level of development, where are organized the teaching of integrated undergraduate studies in dentistry, postgraduate doctoral studies (PhD) and specialist postgraduate education, in all dental fields. Dental and oral health services has raised to a higher level in order to protect the oral health of the population.

The Department of Dentistry of the Faculty of Medicine has fruitful cooperation with many international sister faculties.

The Department of Dentistry, for the realization of the curriculum of integrated studies of dentistry has engaged a staff of 41 academic professionals, and there are 27 Doctors of Science and 14 PhD candidates. All the academic staff of the Department of Dentistry are specialists in the respective fields of dentistry.

Dentistry students, throughout the existence of the Dentistry Branch, played a very important role in all stages of development, very often being the initiators of many positive processes. In addition to their professional successes in the country and the region, today we can be proud of our students who practice the profession very successfully in different countries of the world.

The main objectives of the integrated studies program of Dentistry are:

  • Knowledge of the basic biological, medical, technical and clinical sciences of dentistry in order to recognize the difference between normal and pathological circumstances, which are related to clinical practice;
  • Ability to understand and solve problems, decision-making, program design and implementation, evaluation;
  • Demonstrate professional skills and attitude;
  • Show professional responsibilities
  • Demonstrate the ability to find, analyze, evaluate and synthesize information from multiple sources;
  • Be able to use modern technology;
